The basic definition and other fundamentals of circles were discussed in the previous class. Here we will continue with further discussion on circles. The chapter consists of only two theorems and two exercises. The discussion in this chapter is mainly based on the tangent to a circle and the number of tangents from a point on a circle. A circle is the most common shape we see in our daily lives. Now that we have studied the various theorems in circles, let us see the areas where these are applicable.
A photographer may use circles for focusing the lens. The radius of the lens is used to determine the focal length. Also, the aperture of the camera depends on the diameter of the lens. More light is taken in by the camera when the area of the lens is more. Using circle theorems, a ship navigator uses the nautical radar to figure out where they are or if there’s any incoming. He would see lines or points at certain distances from where the ship may be using theorems to find the distance of the ship to the objects in the water. It is also used in aeroplane design. When designers design an aeroplane, they generally use circular designs. When they design the interior of the plane, they use theorems of circles to calculate how much space is inside the plane. Another career where these theorems would be used is Art.
Artists would use circle theorems for proportionate masterpieces and sculptures. Astronauts and astronomers may use circle theorems to find out how much energy a planet or a star has when orbiting a larger planet or star. When a planet moves in a circular orbit, its potential and kinetic energy do not change. Another example is architecture. For example, if you were building a dome, you would need to know the area of the dome and the circumference. You would also need to know how many angles a certain arc is because of requirements, safety, etc. These are some of the many examples where the concepts of circles are used in real life.
