Q.1. Find the distance between the following pairs of points:
2,3,4,1
Solution:
We know that the distance between two points x1,y1 and (x2,y2) is given by,
x1-x22+y1-y22
The distance between 2,3 and 4,1 is given by,
Distance=2-42+3-12=-22+22=4+4=8=22
Hence, the distance between 2,3 and 4,1 is 22.
Q.2. Find the distance between the following pair of points.
-5,7, -1,3
Solution:
We know that the distance between two points x1,y1 and (x2,y2) is given by,
x1-x22+y1-y22
The distance between -5,7 and (-1,3) is given by,
Distance=-5–12+7-32=-42+42=16+16=32=42
Hence, the distance between -5,7,-1,3 is 42.

CBSE Class 10 Maths Chapter 7 Coordinate Geometry: Chapter Summary

Coordinate Geometry, also called Cartesian Geometry, has lots of applications in the real world. To locate the position of a point on a plane, we require a pair of coordinate axes. The distance of a point from the y-axis is called its x-coordinate, or abscissa. The distance of a point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate, or ordinate.
The coordinates of a point on the x-axis are (x, 0) and of a point on the y-axis are of the form (0, y).

CBSE NCERT Solutions for Chapter 7

Coordinate geometry is an incredibly important technique used in problem-solving for many reasons. If there was no coordinate geometry, only mathematical shapes in their simplest forms could be studied. By simply attaching a coordinate system to the plane (or mathematical space of another dimension), we gain an entirely new ability to think about the position.

Coordinate Geometry consists of four exercises. In this chapter, you will also learn how to find the distance between two points whose coordinates are given and how to find the area of the triangle formed by three given points.

Students in class 10 are advised to study chapter 7 coordinate geometry in depth. The questions are based on concepts given below:

  • The distance between the two points whose coordinates are given
  • To find the area of the triangle formed by three given points
  • How to find the point coordinates that divides a line segment joining two given points in a given ratio.

A deep understanding of the chapter will help students score more in their coming exams and lay a solid foundation for further studies in Engineering and Science Research.
