IBPS Clerk Mains Reasoning Preparation Strategy

1. Seating Arrangement

  • As evident from the analysis above, atleast 5-8 questions will be asked from seating arrangement.
  • Candidates should aim at 100% accuracy in this topic.
  • The thing about questions from this topic is if candidates get the pattern right, all questions can be answered with 100% accuracy.
  • Read the question VERY carefully, even a small mistake can cost 5 questions and ultimately it is candidate’s selection.
  • Visualize the information given in the question by making a figure in rough notebook.
  • Spend atleast 3-4 minutes in comprehending the data and checking the last solution.
  • Altogether candidates will burn through 10 minutes for 10 questions with 100% precision. This is the lottery!
  • Click here for video tips and questions on seating arrangement.

2. Blood Relations

  • They are designed to test the comprehensive abilities of candidates brain.
  • They might seem long and complex but in reality are very easily to solve.
  • The key is to distinguish which type of problem is it:
    • Single person Blood relation
    • Mixed blood relation
    • Coded blood relation
  • Majority of problems will be single person blood relation.
  • They take less time and have higher (90%+) accuracy.
  • For single person blood relation break the sentence at is/was/as and resolve it from last point to is/was/as to get easy solution for the problem.
  • Use diagrammatic representation of problem to solve it.

3. Coding-Decoding

  • High Accuracy Time consuming questions.
  • A majority (50-60%) of questions in this topic are simple, meaning there code can be identified almost instantly, with the look of an eye. Go for solving these kind of questions.
  • Aim at solving only 60% questions from this topic with 90% accuracy.

4. Assumption Inference

  • In this type of questions ambiguity kicks in.
  • There is no definite right or wrong answer, since it depends on the thought process of the candidate.
  • Only answer it, if there is 100% surity or the question is really easy.
  • Spend no more than 2-3 minutes combined on this topic.

5. Data Sufficiency

  • Carefully Read the given statements. Never ever assume anything except universal facts.
  • Think whether the question could be solved with the information given in the statements. These questions are not supposed to involve long and drawn-out calculations. However, if candidates still find themselves doing a lot of calculations, there is certainly something they are not seeing. There is no need to solve the questions themselves.
  • Now use the first statement and combine it with the main statement. If candidates get the answer, then answer is the first statement, and it is sufficient to answer the question.
  • If first statement is not sufficient to find the answer, then take the second statement individually and combine with the main statement. If candidates can get the answer, then answer is the second statement, and it is sufficient to answer the question.
  •  After verifying that both statements individually aren’t enough to find an answer then combine both statements with the main statement and check whether an answer can be found. If candidates can manage to get the answer, then option is both statements combined are sufficient to answer the question.
  • If candidates still can’t find the answer, then both statements are insufficient.
  • Give no more than 50 seconds per question.
  • Aim at 80% accuracy.

6. Inequality, Input-Output and Odd One Out

  • These topics are the perfect mix.
  • Aim for solving 80% of questions.
  • Accuracy 75-80%.
  • Don’t attempt questions which are too hard. (Input-Output section was way too hard in IBPS PO MAINS or RBI Grade B)
  • Refrain from wasting time in input-output if candidates can’t understand the pattern in one go.
  • The odd one out generally doesn’t waste much time and has higher accuracy.
