NCERT CBSE Class 9 Maths Chapter 1: Summary

We have included a synopsis of Chapter 1 Number System here. Make a note of them or print this out. Keep them in mind while you read this chapter to learn about the characteristics and laws of quadrilaterals. The following are the key points in NCERT textbook Class 9 Maths Chapter 1:

1. A rational number r is one that can be represented in the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0.

2. An irrational number is one that cannot be represented in the form p/q, where p and q are integers.

q ≠ 0.

3. A rational number’s decimal expansion is either terminating or non-terminating recurring. Furthermore, a number with a terminating or non-terminating decimal expansion is rational.

4. An irrational number’s decimal expansion is non-terminating and non-recurring. Furthermore, an irrational number is one whose decimal expansion is non-terminating and non-recurring.

5. The collection of real numbers is made up of all rational and irrational numbers.

6. Each point on the number line corresponds to a distinct real number. In addition, there is a distinct point on the number line for each actual number.

7. If r is rational and s is irrational, then r + s and r – s are irrational numbers, as are rs and r/s.

r ≠ 0.

8. For positive real numbers a and b, the following identities hold:

(i) ⎷ab = ⎷a ⎷b

(ii) ⎷a/b = ⎷a ⎷b

(iii) ( ⎷a+⎷b) (⎷a-⎷b) = a-b

(iv) (a+⎷b ) (a-⎷b ) = a2 – b

(v) (⎷a+⎷b)2 = a+ 2⎷ab + b

9. To rationalise the denominator of 1/⎷a+b, we multiply this by , ⎷a-b/⎷a-b, where a and b are integers.

10. Let a > 0 be a real number and p and q be rational numbers. Then,

(i) ap . aq = ap + q

(ii) (ap) q = a pq

(iii) ap / aq = ap-q

(iv) ap bp = (ab)p
