NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Biology Chapter 2 – Biological Classification – Chapter Description
Once we have clarity over defining something to be living, the next step is to classify them and name them using a set of parameters which are universally accepted. In this direction of classifying living organisms, various attempts have been made by several scientists and biologists. Aristotle was among the first to scientifically classify organisms. He used the morphological characters especially classifying organisms based on the colour of blood (red blood and non-red blood). Later Linnaeus proposed two-kingdom classification, namely Plantae and Animalia. However, this system did not distinguish between eukaryotes, prokaryotes, unicellular and multicellular organisms and photosynthetic (green algae) and non-photosynthetic (fungi) organisms.
Thus the two kingdom classification was not sufficient which was overcomed by the R.H. Whittaker who proposed the Five Kindom Classification namely, Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. In this chapter, we will study in detail about the five-kingdom classification with its characteristic and examples. Thus, across the different kingdoms, we will study about bacteria, single-celled eukaryotes, Fungi, Lichens, plants, animals, viruses, viroids, and prions.
