The first banking establishment in India was Bank of Hindustan established in 1770. Currently there are hundreds of big and small banks in India. The Largest Bank in India is the State Bank of India (SBI) – one of the three banks founded by the Presidencies of British India, the other two being Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras. At present Indian banking sector consists of two recognised classes of banks: Scheduled Banks (include Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs); Private Sector Banks & Foreign Banks) and Non-Scheduled banks. Scheduled Banks are regulated under the guidelines under the 2nd Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934 whereas the Non-Scheduled banks are regulated under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
Currently, 27 Public Sector Banks are present in India including 19 Nationalized banks, and out of the rest, 6 being State Bank of India (SBI) & its associate banks and 02 other public sector Banks (Bharatiya Mahila Bank & IDBI Bank).
