CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 3 – Solved Examples

Here are a few questions from the NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Science Chapter 3.

Question 1: State two ways to prevent the rusting of iron.
Answer: Two ways to prevent the rusting of iron are: Oiling, greasing or painting: By applying oil, grease or paint on iron, the surface becomes waterproof and the moisture and oxygen present in the air cannot come in direct contact with iron. Hence, rusting is prevented. Galvanisation: It is the process of depositing layer of zinc on iron’s surface. Here zinc is the sacrificial metal, i.e. it oxidises itself and prevents iron from oxidation.

Question 2: Give reasons- Platinum, gold and silver are used to make jewellery.
Answer: Platinum, gold and silver are used to make jewellery because they are highly malleable and ductile as well as lustrous. Also, they are less reactive and do not corrode easily.

Question 3: Give reasons: Sodium, potassium and lithium are stored under oil.
Answer: Sodium, potassium and lithium are highly reactive metals and react very vigorously with air as well as water. Therefore, they are kept immersed in kerosene oil to prevent their contact with air and moisture.
When sodium is heated in an excess of oxygen or air, sodium peroxide Na2O2 is formed. When the reaction is carried out with a limited supply of oxygen or air, the major product will be sodium oxide.
4Na+O2→2Na2O. Since, the reaction is very exothermic, part of hydrogen reacts with oxygen present in the air to give water. Lithium, sodium and potassium metals react with water to form a colourless solution. Sodium reacts with water to form Sodium hydroxide NaOH with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
The reaction is Na+H2O→NaOH+H2.

CBSE Class 10 Science Preparation Tips

Here are some preparation tips that help students with effective and quick revision in their CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 3.

  • Make Short Notes: Making short notes of important points while studying is a recommended practice for all students. This will improve the efficiency of learning, helps retain information longer and saves time during revision. Notes on the metal and non-metals chapter can be extremely useful as this topic will be covered in greater detail in the upcoming grades and competitive examinations too.
  • Understand the Basics: Understanding the concepts well while studying is more productive when it comes to scoring good marks. Rote-learning though might seem easy and quick, does not yield results because the question types and difficulty level varies in the final exam.
  • Take Mock Tests: Taking regular mock tests help students identity their strengths and weaknesses, improve exam techniques, and time-management skills. Apart from these, repeated attempts can also improve accuracy and speed.

Solve Previous Year Question Papers: Solving previous question papers will give students a fair idea of the type of questions, difficulty level, and the number of questions. Also, every year, a few questions from previous year papers will find their way to the final exam paper. So, there are very good chances for students scoring high marks.

The preparation tips given above are provided by experts at Embibe who are experienced in their field. Hence, we recommend students to follow these tips sincerely and achieve success in their class 10 exam.
