Question: Which of the following correctly describes the magnetic field near a long straight wire?
The field consists of straight lines perpendicular to the wire.

Answer: Magnetic field lines due to long straight current-carrying wire form concentric circles with centre at the wire.

Question: Imagine that you are sitting in a chamber with your back to one wall. An electron beam, moving horizontally from the back wall towards the front wall, is deflected by a strong magnetic field to your right side. What is the direction of magnetic field?

Answer: The direction of the magnetic field can be determined by applying Fleming’s left-hand rule. We know that the direction of conventional current is taken to be in a direction opposite to that of the direction of electron beam. So, the middle finger should point towards the wall. Also, the direction of force is towards the right, so the thumb points right-side. This gives the direction of fore-finger as downwards, or the direction of the magnetic field is downwards.

Question: A coil of insulated copper wire is connected to a galvanometer. What will happen if a bar magnet is pushed into the coil?

Answer: When a bar magnet is pushed into the coil, magnetic field through the coil changes. Hence electric current is induced in the coil momentarily. As a result, galvanometer gets deflected momentarily in a particular direction.

CBSE Class 10 Chapter 13 – Summary

Hans Christian Oersted was one of the leading scientists of the 19th century. His experiment in 1820 known as the Oersted Experiment showed that electricity and magnetism were related phenomena. This chapter deals with the concept of Magnetic Fields and Field Line, Magnetic Field due to Current carrying Conductor, Magnetic Field due to a Current through a Circular Loop, and Magnetic Field of a Solenoid.

This chapter also includes the concept of Force Acting on Current carrying Conductor in a Magnetic Field using Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule, which helps us in the understanding of Electric Motor.
