About NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Maths Ex 6.1

Exercise 6.1 of Class 9 Maths Chapter 6 focuses on the properties of the angles created when two lines intersect and when a line intersects two or more parallel lines at distinct points. The section starts with the introduction of lines and angles, and then we get the definition of some basic terms. After that, students study intersecting and non-intersecting lines. The last topic is “Pairs of angles.” Let’s see some of the important concepts that are discussed in this exercise:

Lines and Angles: A line is a series of closely spaced dots that span in two directions indefinitely. It just has one dimension, which is the length. A line can be defined as a horizontal mark made on a sheet of paper. On the other hand, a figure formed by two rays meeting at the same terminus is called an angle.

A line segment is defined as a part of a line having two endpoints. A line segment, unlike a line, has a defined length.

Ray: A ray is a segment of a line that has a specified starting point but no endpoint in geometry. It can expand in one direction indefinitely.

Collinear and non-collinear points: Three points lying on the same line constitute a set of collinear points. If three or more points do not lie on the same line, they are called non-collinear points.

Angle: We define an angle as a figure formed by two rays meeting at a common point. We use this ∠ symbol to denote an angle. The angle’s arms are the rays that make up the angle, and the angle’s endpoint is the vertex.

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Maths Chapter 6 Exercise 6.1: Chapter Description

Here in this section, we have provided the chapter description for CBSE Class 9 Maths Chapter 6: Lines and Angles. The chapter starts with an introduction to lines and angles. Then, students study some common terms related to lines and angles, such as line segments, rays, collinear and non-collinear points, arms, vertex of angle, etc.

After that, there is a section on the types of angles. There are mainly 5 types of angles:

(i) Acute angle: An angle which is more than 0° but less than 90°.
Acute angle: 0° < x < 90°.

(ii) Right angle: Any angle which is exactly equal to 90°.
Right angle: x = 90°

(iii) Obtuse angle: Any angle which is more than 90° but less than 180°.
Obtuse angle: 90° < x < 180°

(iv) Straight angle: Any angle that is exactly equal to 180°.
Straight angle: x = 180°

(v) Reflex angle: Any angle which is more than 180° but less than 360°.
Reflex angle: 180° < t < 360°

The chapter also discusses about the linear pair of angles.

A linear pair of angles are formed when the sum of two adjacent angles is 180°.

(i) If we stand a ray on a line, then the sum of two adjacent angles so formed is equal to 180°.
(ii) If the sum of any two adjacent angles is 180°, then a ray standing on a line (that is the non-common arms form a line).

∠AOC + ∠BOC = 180°

The last section of the chapter discusses about different properties of lines. They are:

(i) If two straight lines intersect each other at one point, then the vertically opposite angles are equal.
(ii) A line which intersects two or more lines at distinct points is called a transversal.
(iii) If a transversal intersects two parallel lines at two points, then each pair of corresponding angles is equal.
(iv) If two lines are parallel to the same line, will they be parallel to each other.

Angle sum property of a triangle: The sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°.
