Chapter 1: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

In this chapter, students will learn about the fact that the study of chemistry is significant as its domain encompasses every sphere of life. Chemists study the properties and structure of substances and their changes.

Chapter 2: Structure of Atom

This chapter will teach the learners that atoms are the building blocks of elements. They are the smallest parts of an element that chemically react. The students will also learn that according to the quantum mechanical model of the atom, the electron distribution of an atom containing the number of electrons is divided into shells. The shells, in turn, are thought to consist of one or more subshells, and subshells are assumed to be composed of one or more orbitals, which the electrons occupy.

Chapter 3: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties

Students will study the Periodic Law and the Periodic Table development in this chapter. Mendeleev’s Periodic Table was based on atomic masses. Modern Periodic Table arranges the elements in the order of atomic numbers in seven horizontal rows (periods) and eighteen vertical columns (groups or families). Atomic numbers in a period are consecutive, whereas they increase in a pattern in a group.

Chapter 4: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

This chapter teaches the students that an ionic compound is pictured as a three-dimensional aggregation of positive and negative ions in an ordered arrangement called the crystal lattice. A charge balance exists between the positive and negative ions in a crystalline solid. The enthalpy of lattice formation stabilises the crystal lattice.

Chemistry Chapter 5: States of Matter

Intermolecular forces operate between the particles of matter. These forces differ from pure electrostatic forces between two oppositely charged ions. Also, these do not include forces that hold atoms of a covalent molecule together through a covalent bond. Competition between thermal energy and intermolecular interactions determines the state of matter.

Chemistry Chapter 6: Thermodynamics

This chapter teaches the learners that Thermodynamics deals with energy changes in chemical or physical processes and enables us to study these changes quantitatively and make useful predictions. Chemical or physical processes lead to heat (q) evolution or absorption, part of which may be converted into work (w).

Chapter 7: Equilibrium

When the number of molecules leaving the liquid to vapour equals the number of molecules returning to the liquid from vapour, equilibrium is attained and dynamic. Equilibrium can be established for both physical and chemical processes, and at this stage rate of forward and reverse reactions are equal. Students will learn that all substances that conduct electricity in aqueous solutions are electrolytes.

Chapter 8: Redox Reactions

This chapter will teach the learners that Redox reactions form an important class of reactions where oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously. Three-tier conceptualization, classical electronic, and oxidation number, which is usually available in the texts, have been presented in this chapter in detail.

Chemistry Chapter 9: Hydrogen

Through this chapter, students will learn that Hydrogen is the lightest atom with only one electron. Loss of this electron results in an elementary particle, the proton. Thus, it is unique. It has three isotopes, namely: protium, deuterium, and tritium. Amongst these three, the only tritium is radioactive. Despite its resemblance with alkali metals and halogens, it occupies a separate position in the periodic table because of its unique properties.

Chemistry Chapter 10: The s-Block Elements

In this chapter, students will know that there is a regular trend in the physical and chemical properties of the alkali metal with increasing atomic numbers. Learners will also know that the atomic and ionic sizes increase, and the ionisation enthalpies decrease systematically down the group. Somewhat similar trends are observed among the properties of the alkaline earth metals.

Chapter 11: The p-Block Elements

p-Block of the periodic table is unique, having all types of elements- metals, non-metals, and metalloids. The periodic table has six groups of p-block elements, numbering from 13 to 18. Their valence shell electronic configuration is ns2np1-6 (except for He). Differences in the inner core of their electronic configuration greatly influence their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence of this, a lot of variation in properties among these elements is observed.

Chapter 12: Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques

In this unit, the students will learn some basic concepts in the structure and reactivity of organic compounds formed due to covalent bonding. The nature of covalent bonding in organic compounds can be described in terms of the orbitals hybridization concept, according to which carbon can have sp3, sp2, and sp hybridised orbitals. The sp3, sp2, and sp hybridised carbons are found in compounds like methane, methane, and ethyne.

Chapter 13: Hydrocarbons

In this NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 13 Hydrocarbons, students will know that Hydrocarbons are the compounds of carbon and hydrogen only. Hydrocarbons are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum, the major energy sources. Petrochemicals are the prominent starting materials used to manufacture a large number of commercially important products. The important reactions of alkanes are free radical substitution, combustion, oxidation, and aromatisation.

Chapter 14: Environmental Chemistry

Through this topic, the learners will know that Environmental Chemistry plays a major role in the environment. Chemical species present in the environment are naturally occurring or generated by human activities. Environmental pollution is the effect of undesirable changes in the surrounding that have harmful effects on plants, animals, and human beings. Pollutants exist in all three states of matter.
