Selection Process
Following is a description of the various stages involved in selecting West Bengal Police Constables.
Stage 1: Preliminary Written Test
As a qualifying examination, prelims marks are not taken into account while preparing the final merit list. There is a preliminary test of 100 marks, which consists of three subjects: General Awareness and General knowledge, Reasoning, and Elementary Mathematics.
Stage 2: PMT (Physical Measurement Test)
Qualified candidates are eligible to appear for PMT after passing the first stage. In this process, candidates will have their height and weight measured using electronic machines.
Stage 3: PET (Physical Efficiency Test)
PET is open to candidates who have passed the PMT. This test entails running 1600 metres in under 6 minutes and 30 seconds.
Stage 4: Final Written Exam
The final written test consists of four subjects: general awareness and general knowledge, reasoning, English, and elementary mathematics. It is worth 85 marks. The results of these exams will be used to compile a merit list.
Stage 5: Interview
The interview will be worth 15 marks, and only those candidates who have passed the final written test will be invited to the interview phase. Candidates’ suitability for public and general awareness will be tested. Based on the marks earned in the interview and final exam, the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board would compile a merit list of candidates.
Stage 6: Verification of Character Antecedents
Selected candidates must complete a character antecedents verification form, which will be investigated further by the authority. All provisionally chosen applicants will be required to complete a ‘Verification Roll,’ which will be thoroughly investigated by the relevant authority.
The antecedent verification entails determining whether the submitted information, such as an address, date of birth, and other personal information, genuinely belong to the candidate. This stage also includes the verification of any criminal records that may exist.
Stage 7: Medical Examination
Selected Individuals will be taken to a state government hospital for a medical checkup. Candidates must be in good physical and mental health to be considered. Candidates must pass a series of medical tests that the Department of Health and Family Welfare has prescribed. The authority’s medical officer will issue a medical fitness certificate.

WB Police Constable Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates who clear PMT are eligible for the next stage of the selection process, that is, WB Police Constable Physical Efficiency Test. Candidates will need to attempt a running test. Time taken by an individual runner will be measured with the help of Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology. WB Police Constable Physical Test
Candidates appearing for WB constable exam should keep the following things in mind while preparing for the physical test:
- It is of utmost importance that candidates maintain physical fitness and remain healthy and active.
- Practice and have knowledge about all the sports listed in the syllabus for PET, such as the 1600 metre race, so that applicants feel confident while performing the mentioned activity in the PET.
- Get proper sleep so that you feel energetic, refreshed and energised enough to do the performance in the physical task.
WB Police Constable Medical Test
- All provisionally selected aspirants will be moved to the State.
- Government-designated facilities for a medical examination.
- Candidates selected should be in good physical and mental health condition.
- They should not have any abnormalities and should have the ability to perform their task efficiently.
- Candidates shall be put for important medical tests as stipulated or required by the Department of Health and Human and Family Welfare, West Bengal Government in a timely manner.
- Finally, the certificate of medical fitness will be authorised by the medical officer.
Applicants need to appear for different stages of the selection process for the post of Constable in WBP. Each and every stage of the selection process is important to be qualified for this position.
Note that the prelims exam is of qualifying nature. The question paper contains objective type questions, each of which carries one mark. There will be a negative marking of 0.25 for every incorrect answer. The language of the exam will be Bengali and Nepali, except for the English language section in the final exam. 1-hour duration will be given for prelims and mains, which carry 100 and 85 marks respectively, and there will be no sectional time limit.

Candidates scoring good enough marks and successfully clearing the cut-off can sit for the personality test or interview round. WBPRB conducts a personality test that includes 15 marks, here the candidate’s personality traits and eligibility for the job will be tested. WB Police Constable Syllabus: PMT/PET and Interview

Age Criteria
It is important that candidates must thoroughly understand eligibility criteria for the post of police constable such as age limit, nationality, educational qualifications, etc., well before applying for the examination.
- Nationality: Aspirants must be citizens of India with valid government-issued documents. Candidates who are not Indian citizens but are permanently settled in India can also apply for the exam.
- Gender: In West Bengal, recruitment for the post of Constable requires both Male and Female Candidates.
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed the Madhyamik exam from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) or candidates who have passed class 10 from any recognized institution or board are eligible.
- Language: The Bengali language is preferred for the candidates i.e., he must be able to read, write and speak Bengali. However, this criteria may not be applicable for the people who live in the hilly sub-districts of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.
- Age Limit: The minimum age limit of the candidate should be 18 years and the upper limit is 27 years and there is some relaxation in the upper age limit for reserved category candidates.

WB Police Constable Admit Card will be made available thrice in the whole recruitment process. Candidates will receive their admit cards on the website of West Bengal Police at least a month before the exam. It will allow them to enter the examination room.
