IELTS 2022 Exam Pattern

There are two types of IELTS: The first one is academic, and the second one is General Training.

  • Candidates need to make sure they are prepared for the correct test type.
  • The Reading, writing and listening sections of all the tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.

Listening (30 Minutes)

You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions.

Third Recording – A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
Fourth Recording – A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

Reading (60 Minutes)

General Training Reading description

There are three sections. Section 1 may contain two or three short texts or several shorter texts. Section 2 comprises two texts. In Section 3, there is one long text.

Academic Writings (60 Minutes)

Topics are of general interest to, and suitable for, test takers entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration. There are two tasks:

The first task will be to describe, summarise, or explain a graph, table, chart, or diagram in your own words. You may be requested to describe and explain data, process phases, how something works, or a specific object or event.
The second task will be to compose an essay in response to a point of view, an argument, or an issue

General Training Writing (60 Minutes)

Topics are of general interest. There are two tasks:

A problem will be provided to the candidates, and they will be asked to compose a letter asking for information or explaining the situation. The letter might be written in a personal, semi-formal, or official tone.
Students will be required to respond to a point of view, argument, or problem by writing an essay. In terms of style, the essay can be quite personal.

Speaking (11-14 Minutes)

The speaking section assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.

  • First Part – The examiner will ask the students for general questions and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
  • Second Part  – The candidates will be given a card which asks them to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Third Part – The students will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.
