NEET vs Karnataka CET: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a national level medical entrance exam. As per norms, 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats and the 85% state quota seats will be filled through NEET, whereas Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) joint entrance examination conducted in the state of Karnataka. According to the Supreme Court of India, no medical admissions shall be made through the KCET. NEET scores will be used to determine all medical admissions. The states will hold counselling sessions to determine who will be admitted to the 85 percent state quota seats. There will be no state-run entrance examinations.
KCET was earlier conducted for admission to all professional courses in Karnataka, including MBBS, ISM&H, BVSC, BSC in agriculture, pharmacy, engineering, and other farm science programs. In 2017, the Supreme Court, however, cancelled the KCET in favour of the NEET for MBBS admissions. Continue reading this article to know more about KCET vs. NEET.
The NEET and KCET are different in their purposes. NEET is the only entrance exam for all undergraduate medical admissions in India, but KCET entrance is mainly for admission into the engineering colleges in the state of Karnataka. The exam conducting authority Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), has prescribed the detailed syllabus of KCET (UG). The syllabus includes four subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It is crucial for aspirants to know the KCET syllabus for preparation. KCET syllabus 2022 comprises topics from PUC-1 & PUC-2, but has been subjected to changes because of COVID-19. A reduction of 30% syllabus has been made to the syllabus of PUC-1 & PUC-2.
Let us have a look at the syllabus of PUC-1:

Here, let us find out the difference between KCET syllabus 2022 and NEET syllabus 2022:
KCET Syllabus | NEET Syllabus |
Involves Mathematics | No mathematics |
Theory score matters | Theory score does not matter |
Exam questions-40% from 1st PU and 60% from 2nd PU | Exam questions -50% from 1st PU and 50% from 2nd PU |
Biology questions need theoretical approach | Biology questions need more reasoning approach |
Physics is almost the same as in NEET 2022 | Physics is almost the same as in KCET 2022 |
Chemistry is 95 % from NCERT and more numerical-based | Chemistry is 95% from NCERT and more theory-based |
Plant physiology is important | Human physiology is important |
Inorganic chemistry and equilibrium are important | Organic chemistry is important |
2nd PUC electrical section is important in KCET | 1st PUC mechanics and optics are important in NEET |
However, there is no difference in physics & chemistry syllabus, but for NEET 2022 biology syllabus, there are following additions:
Cell Structure and Function
Plant Physiology
Human Physiology
Biotechnology and Its Applications
Marking Scheme for NEET vs. Karnataka CET:
NEET – +4/-1 i.e. NEET Score = (Correct answers X 4) – (Incorrect answers X 1)
KCET – +1/No Negatives, i.e. Correct answer +1 and no marks for wrong answers and unattempted questions
Pattern Difference:
NEET – (180 questions * 4 marks) = 720 marks.
Karnataka CET – (180 questions * 1 mark) = 180 marks.
Difficulty level of NEET is undoubtedly more. The competition here more since there are only limited seats and candidates all across the country apply for it. Therefore, additional skills are required with extra effort.
Karnataka CET does not have negative markings. NEET has negative markings and sufficient attention is required in selection of questions. It requires deduction skills and speed. Finally, NEET 2022 is a national level examination mainly to get into the medical field, whereas KCET 2022 is for engineering, agriculture and pharma courses. You can find the NEET syllabus study material here.
