About JEE-Main

The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI) has founded the National Testing Agency (NTA) as an autonomous organisation to give international standardised tests to assess the competency of candidates for admission to premier higher education institutions in India. Since 2019, the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, and Government of India have made NTA responsible for organising the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main).

The Joint Entrance Examination, JEE Main, comprises two papers. Paper 1 scores are used for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B.Tech.) at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). Moreover, some State Government institutions and universities also admit candidates based on JEE Main scores. JEE Main also serves as an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), the entrance test for admission to IITs. Paper 2 of JEE Main is also the entrance exam for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning courses in the Country.
The JEE (Main) – 2023 is conducted in two sessions, i.e. January and April. This change has been implemented to benefit candidates in the following ways:

  • This will give candidates two chances to improve their scores in the examination in the same year and reduce the pressure to give their best on the first attempt.
  • This will decrease the chances of students spending an extra year to crack the exam.
  • If anyone misses the examination for reasons beyond their control (such as the Board examination), they will not have to wait for an entire year.
  • A candidate need not appear in both JEE Main Sessions. However, if a candidate appears in more than one Session, then their best JEE Main – 2023 NTA Scores out of the two will be considered for the Merit List/ Ranking preparation.
